The Road So Far

Welcome to Nerdy Boss where the rules are made up and the puns don't matter. Content warning right out of the gate, I believe in being open and honest and the only filters I use are on snap chat. So if cursing bothers you this may not be the blog for you. All my other sailors can scroll past this beautiful photo from the worst angle that I absolutely adore and hate at the same time.

Welcome bitches! So now that you're here let's talk about all the things you'll be getting from this blog. I'll be posting everything: my journey, little tips and tricks that I have used, tutorials on creating things, health and wellness tips that help keep me successful with little hints of nerdy fun splashed in. For more of the nerd side and less business visit my other blog All Geek.

My goal is to create tangible takeaways, inspire those who are experiencing failure to launch and honestly track my path so I have material for my next book. Duhhhhh. remember: ABC, ALWAYS BE CREATING!  For today I'm going to go into how this blog got started, keep reading for some useful tips  for you to use as well.

All of this has tumbled together because I started a course on how to publish a book called Book Pop Workshop . I don't make any money on that click (or any clicks in this entire article) but it's a valuable resource for those trying to publish a self help book. The workshop isn't how to write a book but more so a guide to organizing the theme of your book, writing a book proposal and the paths to getting published. Jess Ekstrom, the creator of the course, is so awesome and I was sold about ten minutes into the zoom meeting I attended to learn more. I signed up and got to work.

I was CRUSHING it. I was taking down the homework from this course like a boss and then I hit the part of the book proposal where she discusses marketing and how authors are required to market themselves. I am not new to marketing since I had experience at the consulting company and the CBD brand I worked with, however I have spent zero time marketing ME. What. A. Bummer. I had not even finished publishing my art website. She gives a huge list of possible things you can list to prove your market value and while I started many of things on that list none of them were actually complete.

Throw in the towel?

No! I am not one to give up so I started writing down everything I needed to do in my handy dandy notebook. Here are some of the things I wrote down:

  • Get website up and running, update domain to be more inclusive (change Nerdy Brush to Nerdy Boss). Change instagram and facebook handles to match.
  • Tagline - thoughts "NBG - Art Nerd, Boss Bitch, All Geek" - meh do later
  • Need photos for website
  • Need to develop art collections
  • Need to source prints
  • Create blog(s), actually write
  • Gather testimonials and pictures of custom work
  • Sign up for canva (also not sponsored just very useful for marketing)

The list goes on but I want you to get an idea in case you too need to start creating something similar. Lists are life.

After I exhausted my brain and overwhelmed myself with the monumental task at hand, I took a step back and began to prioritize the tasks. Securing my domain and handles was quick and went first. Then it would be getting the website up and running, develop art collections and photos for the website. I still can't believe that the domain for nerdy boss was available.

I am in the middle of all this right now as I am writing this blog. Since I have had many big ideas that I don't finish I knew I needed to do this differently than before. In order to get all of this together I made a standing appointment with myself. When I come home from work I still hop in my pajamas before I even kiss my boyfriend hello (the corgi gets a kiss though), but instead of turning on the tv I go into my office and have to create for at least one hour.

I absolutely hate when people describe their perfect schedules like real shit doesn't happen. So in the spirit of honesty there are some days where I bail, I am human, but they are less frequent the more that I practice my discipline. Once I sit down and start, I usually go into a time vortex and I need the sound of my tardis alarm clock to pull me out of my time warp. I had to start setting alarms because I was forgetting to make dinner, but that's a great sign that you're doing something right!

I will continue sharing my experiences and I will jump from past situations to current works moving forward but the goal will always be to serve you. Sometimes I think starting a business is less about risk taking and more about discipline, which sucks because it's hard but you can do it.

Time really is money and when Netflix was asked who their biggest competitor was, CEO Reed Hastings said it was sleep. His exact quote was “You get a show or a movie you're really dying to watch, and you end up staying up late at night, so we actually compete with sleep,” Hastings said. “And we're winning.”

YOUR Job is to cut that shit way down. Don't get me wrong I have a comfort rewatch playing in the background right now but it's time to audit your time. I found that I was an absolute liar when I said I was too busy. I wasn't busy, I was rewatching Gilmore Girls for the 27th time.

While I will provide as much useful information as humanly possible, it is up to you to make action plans but hopefully I can help you with that too.

I am excited to have you along for the ride and can't wait to hear your stories too. Follow me @TheRealNerdyBoss if that's your jam, on facebook if that's better or subscribe and get email updates that you're never going to read.
